The Rich Text Entry field allows you to embed an image or link to an image that is stored outside of the entry. You can also add images as attachments to your notebook. For more information on Attachments, Click Here.
To add an image to your entry, click the embed icon on the top toolbar, or select this tool by clicking the +Icon within an entry.
Choose the image file on your computer and click "open" to upload that file to your lab notebook. You can also drag and drop a file into the Rich Text Entry field. The selected image will then be displayed within your rich text entry field.
Note: The image must be less than 10 MB in Size. If the image is larger than these restrictions, it will be scaled down.
Link to an Image that is Stored Outside of the Entry
You can copy an image form an external source and paste that image inside of a rich text entry. To link to an image, paste or type into the URL field and click “Insert”
NOTE: If an image is pasted into a rich text entry or added to the entry through an Image URL, the link to the image can be broken. If the image is stored on a secured web page (Google Drive, your email account, or any application that requires login information), other users may see a broken link when they view the page. To avoid broken links, consider saving the image as an attachment to your notebook or store the image inside of the entry. If you find a broken link, right click and select "Inspect Element" and view the URL used for your image.
Formatting Images within a rich text entry
Once an image is part of the entry, you can make changes to the image.
- To replace the image, with a new image, select the replace option
- To change the alignment of the image, select the alignment option.
- To add a caption for a certain image, click the Caption tool. Captions are recommended to describe a certain image.
- To remove the image, click the trash can icon.
- To use the image as a link to another website, select the chain icon. This allows a viewer to click on the image to open up a certain website. Once you create a link, it can be edited or removed.
- To add Alternative Text, click the T button. Alternative text is used when an image fails to load or for visually impaired readers.
- The ruler icon will allow you to adjust the size of a certain image. You can also click on the corners of the image to adjust the size.
Advanced Edit Image
Directly within a rich text entry, you can make changes to an image. You can crop an image, adjust the color, size, and even add text onto an image. By Default, the first tools that are displayed will allow you to adjust the color, background, and brightness of the image. Whenever you finish working with an image, click “Save”
The Undo, Redo, and Reset buttons allow you to go back to the previous step in editing the image. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Z.
If you draw a shape or line, you can select the item and click the “Remove” button or you can remove all items that you have drawn by clicking the “remove all” button.
To crop an image, select the crop button then click and drag on your image to select the parts that you would like to keep. You can adjust the crop size by clicking and dragging on the corners. Once you have made your decision, click “Apply” or to cancel, click “Cancel.”
You can flip the image on the X or Y axis by clicking these buttons. You can reset the image back to the original location by clicking “reset.”
You can rotate the image by clicking the rotate buttons and then select the angle that you would like to rotate the image.
To draw on an image, click the pencil icon. You can select to make a free hand drawing or draw a straight line. You can also adjust the color of the line by clicking color or adjust the size of the pen by using the “range” option. Once you have selected these options, you can use click and drag your mouse on the image to draw.
You can use the shape tool to draw a shape on the image. If you would like to draw a rectangle, circle, or triangle, select these tools. You can also select the color for the middle of the shape or the Stroke/border of the shape. If you would like to have a wide border or stroke around the image, you can adjust the stroke size. Once you select the color, stroke, and shape that you would like to use, you can add this to your image by clicking on the image. You can adjust the size of the shape by clicking on the edges.
An Icon includes other shapes like arrows, stars hears and custom icons that you can upload. Once you select the color, and Icon that you would like to use, you can add this to your image by clicking on the image. To create your own icon, click “Custom Icon” and select an image on your computer to use. You can adjust the size of the Icon by clicking on the edges.
To add text to your image, select the Text tool. You can select the text size, formatting and color. Once you select these options, you can add a text box to your image by clicking on the image. To type in or paste in your text, double click on the text box. You can adjust the size of the text by clicking on the edges or you can move the text around your image by drag and drop.
The Mask image tool can be used to add a second image onto the original. You can also use this to apply filters. To create a mask image, click “Load Mask Image” and upload a file stored on your computer. You can adjust the size of the mask image by clicking on the edges or you can move the image around your image by drag and drop. If you would like this image to be used as a filter for the original, click “Apply”.
