The LabArchives Widget Library is a collection of custom widgets designed to expand and complement the collection of widgets that are available to all users in the ELN. These custom widgets can be added to your notebook to provide standardized forms for recording information and data.
Available Widgets
The following custom widgets are available from the Widget Library. The code for these widgets can be found at the bottom of the article page.
Core Facility Request Form
This form could be used by a core facility to track requests to process a sample. This might include documenting the request, quote, and documenting when the results of an experiment are shared.
To Do List
This widget allows a user to write out next steps or things that need to be completed then check off as a task has been finished.
Mouse Colony Genotyping Report
This form could be used to document mouse genotyping and may help with tracking a colony of mice.
Standard Operating Procedure
When developing SOP's and safety documentation it can be helpful to use a widget like this to standardize the format of each page.
Project Overview
This widget could be used by a group to summarize a project status.
Research Data Management Plan
This can be used to encourage a group to summarize the project in a research data management and sharing plan. Research data management and sharing plans are often required by NIH and other funding agency
How to Add Widgets from the Widget Library to Your Notebook
All custom widgets, including those in the Widget Library, are created and managed in the Widget Manager. You will use this tool to copy the code for a selected widget in the Widget Library to paste and save as your own custom widget. The Widget Manager does not save automatically. Be sure to click "Save Widget" periodically.
Note: The Widget Manager is not available to Free Edition accounts. Upgrade to a premium account to access this feature.
- The Widget Manager is accessed via the Triple-Dot icon in the top right, as shown below:
- At the top of the Widget Manager page, select the “new” option below “Available widgets”.
- This will clear the Widget Editor fields and present a blank Widget HTML Editor canvas.
- On the Widget HTML Editor tab, click on the “Source” option from the editor menu.
- Download the .txt file for the selected widget from the Widget Library and open in a text editor.
- Copy the entirety of the .txt file. Paste the copied content of the .txt file into the editor. This will display the HTML code for the widget.
- In the Widget Editor Section, enter a name for the widget You can use the same name as used in the Widget Library or change the name. A description is not required but it can explain the intended purpose and context of each widget.
- Click on the “save widget” button. As noted above, custom widgets are not automatically saved.
Note: You can further customize the widget or create your own custom widget, following the details in the Widget Building Basics article.
