SnapGene (Version 4.2 and higher) has been integrated with LabArchives to enable users to directly export files from SnapGene into their LabArchives Notebook. Additionally, when a SnapGenefile is opened from within your Notebook, it may be re-saved into the same Page, preserving both versions of the file.
How to connect SnapGene to your LabArchives Account
- Open SnapGene Viewer. Click "Edit" on the top left and select "Preferences." On the "Files" tab, select "Enable file exchange with LabArchives"
- You will be prompted to login to LabArchives. If you login using a Single Sign on system you will need to create a password token. For more information Click Here. If you login to LabArchives on another server, select that server on the "Server" field.
Save a file to LabArchives
After connecting SnapGene to your LabArchives Account, you can open or save a file to LabArchives in the "File" Menu on the top left.
On the "Save to LabArchives Window" Select a page in your notebook and click "Save."

After connecting SnapGene to your LabArchives Account, you can open aSnapGenefile saved inLabArchives in the "File" Menu on the top left by selecting "Open file from LabArchives"
On the "Open fromLabArchives Window" navigate to the file that you would like open and click "Open."
SnapGeneDocs Viewer
LabArchives also integrates with SnapGene Server allowing users to view a preview of their files. This seamless integration will work right out of the box without requiring users to perform any additional actions.
- To get started, upload a DNA file onto your page using the attachment feature or use the SnapGene desktop integration and save your file directly to your notebook.
- A preview image of the DNA file will appear on your notebook. (Note: If you uploaded a file before February 6, 2020 your thumbnail will not generate a preview until you open it in the Snapgene Viewer and improve your search results)
- Hover over the file and then click on the eye (view online) button.
- This will open up to the SnapgeneDocs Viewer.
- To view more details, hover over the Feature of interest.
Here’s a quick overview of what each button does in the SnapgeneDocs Viewer:
Left side Menu Buttons:
- Show enzymes: show or hide all enzymes
- Show features: show and hide all features.
- Show primers:show or hide all primers.
- Show translations:show or hide all translations.
- Show features on DNA line:show features on the DNA line or next to the line.
- Show feature labels:show or hide feature labels
- Show locations:show or hide all locations.
- Show horizontal map:toggles between a horizontal or linear view.
Bottom Menu Tabs:
- Map: displays a Map view of your DNA file.
- Sequence: enables you to view the DNA sequence inline with Features and Enzymes.
- Enzymes: displays the restriction enzyme sites present in the DNA file, number of cuts, and cut site.
- Features: a list view of a Features with additional details.
- Primers: enables you to view Primers.
