With an electronic notebook, you have the opportunity to quickly provide feedback to students after they complete an assignment. You can use the comment feature or add new or edit existing entries. Click here to learn more about adding and managing data.
If you have linked LabArchives to your Canvas course, you have two options for grading:
Grading with Speed Grader™
Speed Grader allows you to take advantage of Canvas’s tools to grade your students’ LabArchives notebooks. Select an assignment from Canvas and click Speed Grader located on the right-hand side to choose this option.
Speed Grader will open in a new tab of your browser. If you grade in Speed Grader, grades will only be recorded in Canvas. These grades will not transfer to LabArchives.
Additionally, you can use all the tools Speed Grader provides, such as the rubric feature, to assist in grading. You can also add comments in Speed Grader and/or directly on a LabArchives page.
Note: Speed Grader does not have the option to give group grades like LabArchives. If you would like to give the same grade to a group, we suggest using the option to grade in LabArchives. To learn more about this, see below.
Click the Course Manager icon to access LabArchives Course Manager.
Grading with LabArchives
You can grade your students using LabArchives tools in two ways: You can open student assignments in Canvas, or open the assignments in LabArchives using the Course Manager.
To grade using LabArchives tools within Canvas, log into Canvas and select an assignment. This will open the LabArchives Assignment Navigator, where you can grade assignments.
Note: If an instructor creates a Canvas assignment with a deadline, but grades an assignment after its deadline, the grade book will display the assignment as submitted late.
To grade a student’s work directly in LabArchives, first log into LabArchives, then open the course manager and click Open Assignment Navigator on the top right of the Students tab. This will open the LabArchives Assignment Navigator, where you can grade assignments.
The LabArchives Assignment Navigator
You will see the Assignment navigation tool at the top-right of a student’snotebook. With this you can navigate from student to student within a specific course and section (if applicable) for a specific assignment. You can also view different assignments within a course for a given student.
Student names: This field allows you to navigate student notebooks in your course. You can click on the next or previous buttons (students will be listed in alphabetical order) or you can click on the drop-down arrow to see the list of all the students in the course (or in the specified section, if applicable).
Go toassignment: This drop-down-list allows you to select an assignment for a specific course for a selected student. This will allow you to remain on the same assignment when toggling among students.
Assignment Status: After selecting an assignment in the “Go to Assignment” filter, you can filter by Assignment Status: Assigned to Student, Submitted to Instructor, and Graded. The “Submitted to Instructor” option will show all students that have submitted the assignment for grading. Once you grade the assignment the student is no longer on the list.
Course: If you have more than one course, you can switch to another course which will change the list of students, sections, and assignments that can be viewed within the Assignment Navigator.
Section: This allows you to view students in “All sections”, “No sections”, or in specific sections for your course. If no sections were created for your course, this field will not display.
Note: By default, TA’s will see “My Section” when they are assigned to a section of the course.
When you have navigated to the assignment to be graded, the Assignment Entry will look like this:
In the Grade field, put in a percent value (note: you cannot enter decimals). For example, if your assignment is worth 20 points, but the student receives 16 points. In the Grade field, input “80” to indicate the student got 80% and then click on the button.
Note: The grades will be recorded in LabArchives’ gradebook and in Canvas’ gradebook.
You can also, click on the button if you want to send the assignment back to the student for edits. The assignment entry will go back to its assigned status. However, if you have already graded the assignment, click on the pencil edit icon to access the “Re-assign to Student” option.
Grading an Assignment Submitted by a Group
When students submit a group assignment, they will indicate their group members on the “I worked in a group with” line. The Group members will also select location for the work using “The work for this assignment is in” line. To navigate to another student, click on the name of the student in the “I worked in a group with” field.
Note: These fields are self-selected by each student in the group.
To assign a grade to one student, navigate to one student in the group, put in a percent value (note: you cannot enter decimals) in the Grade field and click on the button.
To apply the same grade to the entire group, click on the button.
If you have previously assigned a grade to other students in the group, you will receive the following message:
If you want all group members to have the same grade click on the Overwrite button, if not, click Cancel.
When you select the Assign Grade to Group button or Overwrite button, you will see that grade was successfully assigned to the group.
Note: The grades will be recorded in the LabArchives’ gradebook and in Canvas’ gradebook.
If you are grading in LabArchives, you can access student grades in Canvas and in the Course Manager. In the Course Manager, it is located under the Grades tab.
You can export grades to CSV or PDF file.
